Basics

What is IPTV?

IPTV means "Internet Protocol Television": live channels and on-demand content delivered over your internet connection rather than a coaxial cable or a satellite dish. It is a delivery method, not a company and not a legal category — YouTube TV, Hulu + Live TV and your cable company’s own app are all IPTV in the technical sense.

How it works, briefly

A broadcaster sends a channel to a server. The server breaks it into small segments and publishes them. Your player requests those segments in order and stitches them into continuous video. Because the player is requesting rather than receiving a broadcast, it can adapt: if your connection slows, it requests lower-quality segments instead of stopping.

That adaptation is why streams degrade in picture quality before they fail, and why a stream can look perfect for ten minutes and then soften — you are watching bandwidth management in real time.

How it differs from Netflix

Netflix is a library: you choose a title and it plays from the beginning. Live IPTV is a schedule: you join a channel wherever it happens to be. Both travel over the same internet connection using similar technology, and they answer completely different questions about what to watch.

Questions people ask

Is IPTV the same as streaming?

Technically yes — IPTV is television delivered over internet protocol, which is what every streaming service does. In common usage, "IPTV" tends to describe live-channel services specifically, as opposed to on-demand libraries.

Do I need a special box for IPTV?

No. Any device that can run a compatible player works: a Fire TV Stick, an Android box, a smart TV with a suitable app, a phone, or a computer.

Why does the picture quality change while I watch?

Adaptive streaming lowers quality when your connection cannot sustain the current bitrate, which keeps playback going instead of stopping. It is the system working as designed.
