Per stream, by quality
Data-per-hour figures matter if you watch on a mobile connection or a capped home plan. A sports afternoon on 4K can consume more data than a month of ordinary browsing.
| Quality | Plan for | Data per hour | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| SD (480p) | 3 Mbps | 1.4 GB | Older channels and some international feeds still deliver at this level. |
| HD (720p) | 5 Mbps | 2.3 GB | The most common live-channel quality in practice. |
| Full HD (1080p) | 8 Mbps | 3.6 GB | Plan for this as the realistic per-stream default. |
| 4K / UHD | 25 Mbps | 11.3 GB | Only a small share of live channels are genuinely 4K anywhere. |
Adding up a household
The gap between "streaming needs" and "sensible line speed" is deliberate. Real connections do not deliver their advertised figure continuously, and everything else in the house — updates, backups, video calls, a games console downloading in the background — competes for the same pipe.
| Household | Streams | Streaming needs | Sensible line speed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single viewer, HD | 1 | 8 Mbps | 25 Mbps or more |
| Couple, two rooms | 2 | 16 Mbps | 50 Mbps or more |
| Family, three screens | 3 | 24 Mbps | 75 Mbps or more |
| Family plus 4K and gaming | 4+ | 50 Mbps+ | 200 Mbps or more |
Testing properly
- Run a speed test on the streaming device itself, not on a laptop next to the router.
- Run it at the hour you actually watch. Evening congestion is the whole point of the test.
- Repeat on Ethernet if the device has a port. A large gap between wired and wireless means the problem is your Wi-Fi, not your provider.
- Check the latency and packet-loss figures, not just the download number. Stable 30 Mbps beats erratic 200 Mbps for live video.
Questions people ask
Is 50 Mbps enough for IPTV?
For two or three simultaneous HD streams, yes, provided the connection is stable and not shared with heavy downloads at the same time. For multiple 4K streams it is marginal.
Does upload speed matter for IPTV?
Barely — video comes down, not up. Upload matters for video calls and cloud backups, which compete with your streams for the connection overall.
Why does it buffer when my speed test looks fine?
Speed tests measure a short burst to a nearby server. Live video needs sustained throughput over hours, and it is sensitive to latency spikes and packet loss that a speed test does not report.
