Internet speed calculator for streaming households

Multiply your simultaneous streams by the bandwidth each quality needs — about 8 Mbps for HD and 25 Mbps for 4K — then add headroom for everything else on the connection. The table below covers the common combinations without any input from you.

2 simultaneous streams at 8 Mbps each needs 16 Mbps of sustained throughput. Aim for a line of 48 Mbps or more so the rest of the household does not disrupt it. Each stream uses about 3.6 GB per hour.

540 Mbps125 Mbps120 Mbps
  • The "line speed to aim for" column includes roughly three times the raw stream requirement, because real connections do not sustain their advertised rate and the rest of the household competes for the same pipe.
  • SD (480p): plan 3 Mbps per stream. Older channels and some international feeds still deliver at this level.
  • HD (720p): plan 5 Mbps per stream. The most common live-channel quality in practice.
  • Full HD (1080p): plan 8 Mbps per stream. Plan for this as the realistic per-stream default.
  • 4K / UHD: plan 25 Mbps per stream. Only a small share of live channels are genuinely 4K anywhere.

Questions people ask

How many Mbps do I need for 3 streams?

About 24 Mbps of raw throughput for three HD streams, and a line of 75 Mbps or more so the rest of the household does not disrupt them.

Does 4K need four times the bandwidth of HD?

Roughly three times: plan 25 Mbps per 4K stream against 8 Mbps for HD. The exact figure varies by how the source is encoded.

Why aim so far above the raw requirement?

Advertised speeds are peak, not sustained, and everything else in the house — updates, backups, calls, consoles — shares the connection. Headroom is what stops evening buffering.
