Bandwidth per stream, by resolution
Resolution is a bandwidth question before it is a picture-quality question. These are planning figures per simultaneous stream — add them together for a household, and add whatever else uses the line at the same time.
| Quality | Plan for | In practice |
|---|---|---|
| SD (480p) | 3 Mbps | Older channels and some international feeds still deliver at this level. |
| HD (720p) | 5 Mbps | The most common live-channel quality in practice. |
| Full HD (1080p) | 8 Mbps | Plan for this as the realistic per-stream default. |
| 4K / UHD | 25 Mbps | Only a small share of live channels are genuinely 4K anywhere. |
Two 4K streams on a 50 Mbps line, with a games console updating in the background, is how "the service is broken" reports usually begin. The link speed your provider sells is also a ceiling shared by every device in the house.
How to tell real 4K from an upscaled feed
None of this is a reason to avoid a service. It is a reason to buy on the channels you actually watch rather than on a resolution badge, and to size your plan on simultaneous streams rather than on a "4K" label.
- Check the player’s stream information overlay if it has one. It reports the incoming resolution and bitrate, which the channel name cannot.
- Record the incoming resolution and codec if your player reports them. Bitrate alone does not prove source resolution or native production quality.
- Compare the same programme at different available quality settings on your normal screen. Note whether the higher setting improves detail and remains stable.
- A television reporting a 4K HDMI input is reporting the device output. That display alone does not confirm the original programme was produced in 4K.
Devices that can actually decode it
| Device class | 4K capable | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Fire TV Stick 4K / 4K Max | Yes | Check the exact model, operating system and supported player. An Android APK needs a compatible Fire OS device. |
| Apple TV 4K | Yes | Player app support for the account format matters more than the hardware. |
| Google TV Streamer / Android TV 4K boxes | Yes | Cheap no-name Android boxes often claim 4K and decode only 1080p. |
| Samsung Tizen / LG webOS TVs | Model dependent | The TV is 4K; the available player app may still be limited. |
| Older 1080p TVs | No | A 4K stream on a 1080p panel spends bandwidth for no visible gain. |
Questions people ask
Does CatchONTV include 4K on every channel?
Do not assume every channel or programme is available in 4K. Confirm the specific feed with support and check the incoming stream information in a compatible player. A channel-list label alone is not a quality guarantee.
How much internet speed does 4K IPTV need?
Plan around 25 Mbps per simultaneous 4K stream, on top of everything else using the connection. HD needs roughly 5–8 Mbps per stream, which is why most households are better served by stable HD than by stressing the line for 4K.
Will a 4K stream look better on a 1080p TV?
No. The TV downscales it to 1080p and you have spent the extra bandwidth for nothing. Match the stream to the panel you actually own.
